08 May The G-Force Source: don’t fear the barbell, make it fear you!
“I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear.”
— Nelson Mandela
Fear is within all of us. It takes different forms, different sizes and has a different affect on us individually; it’s what makes us human. Fear, unfortunately, crosses over into the CrossFit world where we find people afraid of movements, afraid of workouts, afraid of cardio (YEP!), afraid of scales and sometimes, afraid of results, which in a coach’s eye is the most troubling.
Fear at G-Force is our greatest enemy and we continually work towards defeating that fear. What we tend to see most is the fear of one of our favourite movements: the snatch!
The snatch is by far the most complex movement you’ll perform in CrossFit. It has been practiced for longer than any of us have been alive and still to this day, professional athletes at an Olympic level continue to try to perfect it. We want everyone to understand that it is difficult, but we don’t want you succumbing to the fear of performing it.
At G-Force, we program the snatch weekly. Those that struggle with the movement are given scaled alternatives which are designed to build you up to a level competent enough to perform the snatch. We’ve had an influx of new athletes join us at G-Force, and already, we’re seeing some of them start to slowly get more comfortable with the movement. Progress and results are what drive us as coaches and we hope that’s what drives you too!
To help alleviate the fear of the snatch but also to help some of you see new personal bests, G-Force is running an in-house weightlifting competition without all the seriousness. Continue below to read up on the details. Additionally, we have some new information for you about our website and as always, PBs!
Remember what Yoda says: “Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering.”
We hope not to sense too much fear in you…
